The decision is not as simple as that. First you need to answer four basic questions about your attitude and purpose:
First of all both a stationary exercise bike and a treadmill help you perform outdoor activities indoors. Outdoors you certainly would not get bored easily as indoors as you wouldn’t look at the same wall / window / picture all the time.
Secondly you need to decide what ‘more effective’ means to you More effective for weight loss cardio workout toning your body or building body strength Taken just on their own neither a stationary exercise bike nor a treadmill will do the job well. They need to slot into an integrated solution together with nutrition and strength training.
Thirdly you know best the threshold of your ‘sustainability’ level. If you don’t sustain your exercise regimen neither machine will help. If you don’t enjoy running or stationary exercise bikes are boring for you neither machine will do much apart from gathering dust.
Fourthly do you like your workout being dictated by the machine This is a frequently overlooked factor.
The X-Bike is a stationary bike with lateral moving handle bars (X-Bars) that replicate the motion of riding a real bike.
The X-Bars handlebar mechanism allows riders to engage the upper body and core musculature along with the legs and cardiovascular systems delivering a total-body workout providing substantially improved training benefits while bringing the natural body movements and rhythm of outdoor cycling indoors.
The handlebar movement also promotes improved balance and coordination functions further enhancing the benefits the X-Bike can offer when used in Personal Training Programs Strength/Cardio Circuit Training or just pure calorie burring workouts.
The X-Biking training programme completes the ride experience. Users love the fun natural and total-body low-impact workout delivered; giving them the most time efficient effective and functional workout or warm up possible. Anyone who enjoys cycling loves the “true to cycling feel” and that it allows users to stand and climb sprint turn coast and even shift naturally as if you were riding a bicycle outdoors.

I’m planning on asking for a stationary exercise bike for Christmas but looking around trying to pick one out has proved to be a lot harder than I expected it to! I’m most interested in a Recumbent or Semi-Recumbent Bike – my family has a long history of back problems and I’ve heard those types provide the most support. I’ve noticed most stationary bikes support weight up to 250 lbs but one that could support up to 300 would really be preferable. I have a budget of $500-550.
I’d love to hear your suggestions! Thanks in advance.
Schwinn Air Dyne. It will kick your butt.
