Indoor cycling as an organized activity is a form of exercise with classes focusing on endurance strength intervals higher intensity (race days) and recovery that involves using a special stationary exercise bicycle with a weighted flywheel in a classroom setting.

History

Ultra-endurance athlete Jonathan Goldberg developed the concept of indoor cycling classes in the 1980s. Subsequently a trademarked program (Spinning) was later introduced by Mad Dogg Athletics Inc. a company founded by Goldberg and John Baudhuin.

Classes

Participants set goals based on their heart rate which can be measured by hand or using a heart rate monitor and ride simulated variations in terrain by altering resistance and cadence. If someone is new to indoor cycling and has not yet purchased a heart rate monitor then they can judge their level of exertion on an RPE (relative perceived exertion) scale. This scale has numbers which range from six (no exertion at all) to 20 (maximum exertion). Instructors guide classes by calling out the level of exertion at which participants should be.

what is the minimum age for a person to use exercise bikes/stationary cycles
is it safe for a 15 year old to use exercise bikes

Absolutely. There is no issue whatsoever for a 15 year old using an exercise bike. The only concern actually is if you want to be unhealthy then I would say don’t do it :-)

Your butt may be sore for awhile when you first start but give it some time. You will acclimate to the saddle after a couple weeks . An excercise bike is great but it doesn’t compare to the fresh air views and camaraderie of real cycling. Also you don’t have the wind resistance or gravity challenges and it is definitely more boring. That said if you want long lean muscles you should start with a 10 minute warm up going at a cadence of about 60 RPM’s (revolutions per minute) of the cranks/pedals. Then spin the cranks at over 70 RPM’s but try to go higher – closer to 100. That will build the slow twitch muscles in your legs and promote lean flexible muscle. If you want large muscles in your thigh area then you would mash down on the pedals with greater effort. Try to be on the bike for about 1 hr per day for about 4 days a week. 10 minute warm up 40 minute brisk pedaling 10 minute cool down. Then stretch.

After you get bored riding the stationary bike consider getting out on the road for some real cycling and find out what the sport is really about. We can use more women out there! Good luck have fun.
